MARTIN, Tenn., November 24, 2015– The Society of Saint Andrew (SOSA), in conjunction with the Steele Plant Company, will be hosting a sweet potato “crop drop” on Tuesday December 1st from 2-5 PM at the Martin Farmer’s Market.
“This is an incredible organization that we are proud to be a part of,” said Rep. Andy Holt (R-Dresden). “My wife Ellie and I have been working with SOSA for many years. It’s an incredible opportunity for farmers to work within their community and feed the hungry.”
The Society of Saint Andrew is a nationwide, non-profit organization founded in 1979. SOSA seeks to embody the scripture 1 John 3:18 (“Let us love not only in words, but indeed and in truth”) by “gleaning” non-marketable or leftover produce in an effort to alleviate our nation’s hunger challenge. In 2015, over 100 billion pounds of food has been wasted in the United States. The Society of Saint Andrew seeks to help eliminate all types of food waste, but especially produce. By going into farmer’s fields, packing houses, and farmer’s markets across the country, SOSA’s “gleaners” are given the opportunity to “rescue” produce that may not be marketable, but can still be used as a fresh food source by soup kitchens, shelters and various hunger relief agencies.
The Steele Plant Company of Gleason, TN (owned and operated by Ken Sanders and Larry Hutson) has donated a semi-truck load of sweet potatoes from their operation and on December 1st, we will have approximately 29,000 pounds of sweet potatoes at the Martin Farmer’s Market that will need to be bagged and sorted. Once bagged, the potatoes will then be picked up by agencies all across West TN which operate programs designed to feed families in need.
Locals of all ages are invited and encouraged to come and volunteer an hour or part of your afternoon to help feed hungry people in our area. A willingness to help your fellow neighbor is the only requirement for volunteering.
If your church, civic group or other organization has a program seeking to help families, we would welcome your participation as a distributing agency. If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact Ellie Holt, West TN Program Coordinator for the Society of Saint Andrew, at email@example.com or 731-364-3459.
